Players from area join MU softball program
HUNTINGTON — Sydney Chapman from Cabell Midland High School and Caiti Mathes from Hurricane High School are part of the 2019 Marshall University softball recruiting class.
First-year Thundering Herd coach Megan Smith also signed Ashley Blessin from Plant City, Florida, and Delaney Heaberlin of Eustis, Florida.
“This class adds extreme athleticism and much needed depth in the (pitching) circle,” Smith said in a HerdZone.com release. “They all are excited to play for something bigger than themselves and become daughters of Marshall.”
Chapman is an infielder following a recent line of Cabell Midland players with the Herd including Morgan Zerkle, Jordan Colliflower and current senior Abigail Tolbert. Chapman had a .425 batting average as a junior.
“I chose Marshall because it is close to home and I was born and raised a Marshall fan,” Chapman said.
Mathes has helped lead Hurricane to three consecutive Class AAA state championships and was a teammate of current Marshall sophomore Katie Adams. She has career totals of 35 home runs, 154 runs batted in and a batting average above .400.
She said Marshall is a family environment and felt like home where she needed to be so her family can come watch the Herd play.
Blessin enters her senior season at Plant City High School with a 61-11 career pitching record, an 0.85 ERA and 680 strikeouts. The right-hander is a three-time Hillsborough County Pitcher of the Year as chosen by the Tampa Bay Times newspaper.
Heaberlin is a pitcher and hitter for Eustis High School who had a 1.00 ERA and .361 batting average in her junior season.
