Ex-Royal John Mayberry Arrested

March 5, 1999

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Former Kansas City Royals star John Mayberry was charged with resisting arrest after scuffling with police on a traffic warrant and swallowing a plastic bag.

The 50-year-old former player was released after posting bond Wednesday night.

Mayberry was stopped about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday and police discovered he was wanted for a traffic violation. When they tried to arrest him, he shoved a plastic bag into his mouth and ran off, the officers said.

The officers tackled Mayberry and he swallowed the plastic bag, police said. He was taken to a hospital to be examined.

``As to what he swallowed, we don’t know what it was,″ Sgt. Floyd Mitchell said.

Mayberry, a power-hitting first baseman in the 1970s, spent 15 seasons in the majors, playing with Houston, Kansas City and Toronto. In his six seasons with the Royals, he averaged 24 home runs and 94 RBIs. He retired in 1982.
