PARIS (AP) _ It was a jungle out there.

World Cup fans heading to Saturday's quarterfinal matches squeezed into packed trains and clogged roads just as hundreds of thousands of locals left for summer vacation.

About 830,000 French vacationers were expected to take the train to start their summer holidays. They were joined by about 100,000 soccer fans trying to get to Marseille and Lyon.

Germany plays Croatia in Lyon on Saturday night, while in Marseille, the Netherlands meets Argentina in quarterfinal World Cup play.

The state SNCF train company said 1,500 trains will be in service Saturday.

Cars loaded with families, bikes and beach gear headed south for the Mediterranean on France's main north-south highway, which passes Lyon and leads to Marseille.

This is France's third busiest travel weekend in the year, and extra police have been deployed in airports, train stations and on the highways.
