Fox, raccoon bites reported in Fairhope

October 7, 2018

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (AP) — State health officials say a woman in south Alabama was bitten by a rabid raccoon and another woman was bitten by a fox.

Alabama Department of Public Health officials said both attacks occurred in Fairhope and follow a string of fox attacks in Baldwin County.

Greg Dunn, the environmental director for the southwestern district, said foxes have bitten seven people and two dogs in Baldwin County since May 21.

Dunn said it is “especially disturbing” that these incidents occurred in densely populated areas.

The woman was bitten on her calf and thumb by a fox after she went on her porch to feed her cat. Another woman was bitten by a raccoon in a hospital parking lot. The raccoon tested positive for rabies.

Both women were treated for rabies exposure.
