Masked attacker injures Pakistani imam in Norway

June 17, 2014

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Norwegian police say they are searching for a masked assailant who seriously injured a Pakistani imam, the head of the Scandinavian country’s biggest mosque.

Oslo police spokeswoman Grete Lien Metlid said Nehmat Ali Shah was attacked with a metal object outside his home in Oslo Monday. She said the injuries were not life-threatening and they expect to question him soon.

Lien Metlid said Tuesday it was too early to say if the attack was linked to Shah’s duties at the Central Jamaat-e Ahl-e Sunnat mosque.

Shah has been surrounded by bodyguards since a violent brawl in 2006 between two rival Muslim groups using baseball bats, knives and a hammer. According to court documents, the fight was rooted in a disagreement over who should be the imam at the mosque.
