Kasparov Resigns 16th Game; Title Contest Tied 8-8
SEVILLE, Spain (AP) _ World chess champion Garri Kasparov resigned the adjourned 16th game of his title contest against challenger Anatoly Karpov today without resuming play.
With eight games remaining the score stands tied at 8-8. Each player has scored three wins, with 10 games drawn.
The game was adjourned on Monday night with Karpov, playing black, a pawn ahead in an endgame.
The winner of the 24-game series requires 12.5 points or six victories. A win scores one point and a draw a half.
But in the event of a 12-12 tie Kasparov will stay champion.
The 17th game is scheduled for Wednesday with Karpov playing white.
