Names In The Game

DENVER (AP) _ Thirty-three years after Arnold Palmer took a mighty swing on the first tee to start the charge that was to identify his game through most of his career, his famous driver is back at Cherry Hills Country Club.

In the 1960 U.S. Open, Palmer used the persimmon club to drive the green on the 346-yard hole, triggering a string of birdies that carried him from seven strokes behind to a dramatic victory that established his reputation as a hard charger.

The club will be displayed in a trophy case at the course along with other clubs used by those who have won national championships at the course. supposedly they are the clubs the winners deemed most significant to their victories. For all these years, however, the case has housed Palmer’s putter, not his driver.

During the U.S. Senior Open at Cherry Hills last month, Palmer was asked why he didn’t turn over the driver. ″Because I was still using it,″ he said.

Then he was asked if he would consider donating it now. ″If they asked,″ he said, ″I probably would.″

″You are asked 3/8″ blurted club member Steve Knowlton.

″That club changed golf,″ said Gene Neher, who was a marshal on the first tee that day. ″It’s absolutely priceless.″

Knowlton and Neher, who are co-chairman of a heritage committee, are putting together a special Palmer display to commemorate the historic event.
