Names In The Game
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) _ Wyoming football coach Joe Tiller wants his players to spend more time in the back of the paper than the front.
″I worry every morning when I wake up and get the morning paper that we might be in the paper, and I mean that candidly,″ the first-year coach said.
Earlier this year three Wyoming players were charged with assault in separate incidents.
Wide receiver Fred Harris was acquitted in his case, former fullback Mark Timmer is scheduled to stand trial next month, and defensive lineman Thomas Williams was placed on probation after pleading guilty in his case. Last week Tiller announced that Williams would be suspended from the team for the 1991 season.
Tiller said Tuesday that he is not presenting his players with a sheet of guidelines to governor their behavior, but simply asking them to use common sense and realize that as athletes they are in the public’s eye every day.
″We just expect them to respond accordingly,″ Tiller said. ″If they don’t we’re going to deal with them.″
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - It’s football with a money-back guarantee this season at Austin Peay.
The Governors are offering season-ticket holders a full refund if the team doesn’t break its 23-game losing streak.
″Unfortunately, the thing our football team is known for right now is our losing record,″ athletic director Tim Weiser said Tuesday. ″We’re trying to turn a negative into a positive with this guarantee.″
Had the Governors made the same promise last season, the Division I-AA football school would have had to return about $25,000 to the 754 season- ticket holders who sat through the Ohio Valley Conference school’s second straight 0-11 season.
LEMONT, Ill. (AP) - Kelly Johnston gets about 230 yards out of her driver.
On the 274-yard, par-4 10th hole at Cog Hill’s No. 3 course, she was about 44 yards longer.
Johnston, a 20-year-old member of the University of Florida golf team, aced the hole Tuesday during a local amateur tournament.
The hole is a slight dogleg right. Johnston of St. Charles, Ill., played the ball over a tree and said she ″saw it rolling all the way up onto the green,″ but couldn’t see it rolling onto the cup.
The ball hit another ball on the green and was deflected in, observers said.
