Texas officers cleared in shooting of man with knife
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A grand jury has declined to indict a handful of South Texas police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a knife-wielding man while serving a burglary warrant.
Brownsville police announced the decision Thursday and released the body camera footage from the Oct. 5 shooting on its Facebook page.
The footage shows officers attempting to serve the warrant. The suspect, 32-year-old German Ornelas, is seen standing on a sofa holding a knife.
An officer asks the others to let him lead because he can record with his body camera. They ask Ornelas in Spanish and English to drop the knife and get down before he is seen lunging toward the door with the knife.
An officer fires multiple shots, striking Ornelas. He was transported to the hospital where he died.
