Albright: More Talks When Calm

October 6, 2000

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said Friday that Israeli and Palestinian negotiators have agreed in principle to come to Washington to discuss a resumption of the peace process once calm has been restored in the area.

Albright made the disclosure in an interview with Fox News as violence continued to rage between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

``When calm is restored, the president has invited the negotiators for both sides to come to Washington to see about resuming the peace talks,″ she said.

She said it would be very difficult to reopen negotiations so long as the violence continues.

Earlier, she said in a CNN interview, ``We are trusted by both sides. Were going to do our best. ...We will do everything we can to pursue peace.″
