JERUSALEM (AP) _ An ultra-Orthodox Jew was stabbed to death today in a Palestinian area of Jerusalem, in an assault police blamed on Palestinian militants.

The attack took place on the Shuafat ridge, in an ultra-Orthodox housing development surrounded by Palestinian neighborhoods. The victim was stabbed repeatedly in the chest as he was walking in the street, police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said.

The victim, who was not identified, was about 30 and was carrying a prayer shawl. He was apparently on his way to a synagogue, Israel radio and Israel army radio reported.

Police spokeswoman Michal Tsimburg said the attack was likely carried out by Palestinian militants.

Police are searching for a vehicle that was seen in the neighborhood shortly before the slaying, Jerusalem police chief Yair Yitzhaki said.

Two Jewish seminary students have been stabbed in the past two weeks in separate incidents inside Jerusalem's walled Old City. Police say they believe the attackers were Palestinian militants.
