Melbourne Victory beat Western Sydney 2-1 in A-League

January 6, 2015

SYDNEY (AP) — Gui Finkler scored a late winner as the Melbourne Victory beat Western Sydney Wanderers 2-1 on Tuesday to move into third place in Australia’s A-League.

Carl Valeri gave Melbourne the lead in the 14th round match with a powerful volley from the edge of the box. Wanderers midfielder Nick Kalmar equalized in the 55th minute — scoring the Wanderers’ first goal since the eighth round.

But Finkler combined with Fahid Ben Khalfallah, Kosta Barbarouses and Besart Berisha in an 80th minute counterattack to secure the points and Melbourne’s eighth win of the season.

Western Sydney, the Asian club champions, remains without a win and in last place in the standings.
