Father Faints in Delivery Room

March 23, 2001

CENTERTON, Ark. (AP) _ A father who fainted and hit his head in the delivery room as his wife was giving birth was released from the hospital Thursday after five days in intensive care.

Eighth-grade science teacher Tim Pate, 35, suffered severe swelling of the brain after he collapsed March 10 and drifted in and out of consciousness in the days that followed.

His wife, Lora Pate, was deep into labor and was not told how serious her husband’s injury was until after her daughter was born.

``All that I was aware of was that Tim had fainted and had to be removed from the birthing room,″ she said. ``It was not until about an hour after I had had the baby that they finally started talking to me about things being life-threatening and comas. It was a very scary incident for our entire family.″

Lora Pate said her husband doesn’t remember the accident.

``He is just very upset that he missed the birth of our daughter, Kennedy,″ she said. The child is the couple’s second.
