No.14 Illinois 67, New Mexico St. 65
LAIE, Hawaii (AP) _ Senior forward Ken Norman scored 24 points as No. 14 Illinois held off New Mexico State 67-65 in Friday night’s opening game of the BYU-Hawaii Thanksgiving Tournament.
Duke played host Brigham Young-Hawaii in the night’s second game.
Norman had 10 points over a five-minute span as the Fighting Illini took a 65-55 lead with 3:55 to play. The Aggies closed to 67-63 with 59 seconds left, helped by Jeff McCool’s three-point basket.
New Mexico State’s Steve McGlothin’s follow shot with seven seconds left closed out the scoring.
Glynn Blackwell added 10 points for Illinois. For the Aggies, Kenny Travis had 19 points and McGlothin finished with 14.
New Mexico State played without starters junior guard Jeff Williams and senior forward Pierre Smith.
New Mexico State Coach Niel McCarthy said the two were suspended after being arrested for shoplifting earlier Friday in Honolulu. They were still being held by police Friday night.
