Readers share stories of coupons and savings
I always enjoy hearing how you’re saving with coupons! That little thrill you feel when you’ve put a deal together can be very exciting – especially when you consider that you may have also stocked up on an item, and you won’t have to purchase it again in the near future. Here are some stories of coupon savings from you, my readers:
“DEAR JILL, Here’s a great deal I did on dish detergent. Large bottles of a name brand were on sale for $1.79, and I printed two $1.50 coupons online. That’s .29 dish detergent! When I went to the store, I saw a bunch more bottles with $1.00 coupons hanging on bands around the bottle necks. This store has a limit of 2 identical coupons per shopping trip, and so I got four bottles and paid $2.16 for all four!” — REBECCA D.
“DEAR JILL, I spotted an ice cream deal right in the store aisle. Ice cream was on sale for $2.49 a tub, and there were $1.50 coupons in a dispenser on the freezer case door. I had to think about how much freezer space I had open at home and got three tubs for .99 each! I couldn’t believe my good luck. I also couldn’t believe no one else was doing this deal. I saw another woman pick up a $4.49 tub of ice cream from another brand and told her about the deal, but she said she wanted the other brand. I got three times as much and still paid less than she did. That is smart shopping to me!” — FAYE G.
“DEAR JILL, I have learned a lot from you about buying at ‘stock up’ prices. Here is an example. A 16-ounce jar of peanut butter is usually
$2.99. It was on sale for .99 a jar. That is already about 66% less than it normally sells for.
When I got to the store, some jars had peel-off coupons stuck to the lids for $1.50 off two jars! I paid 48 cents for two jars. Such a steal. I almost feel like I robbed the store!” — MARG I.
Not every great deal is made possible by coupons. Many deals can be found simply by buying at the right time. Several readers have shared stories of shopping clearance sales at the perfect times:
“DEAR JILL, I am taking a cruise this December. Why am I telling you this now? Because right now is a great time to buy the things I will need for the trip. Fall is right around the corner and bathing suits are all on clearance at the department stores. So are sandals and all kinds of summerwear. If you are not paying attention to these sales, you could miss them. They are worth seeking out as you will pay so much less. I even found a large canvas beach tote for $2.99.” — PRIYA P.
“DEAR JILL, My summer goal was to clean out my closet. I found inspiration this week in an unlikely place: The back-to-school aisle of a big box store. Now that school is underway, all of the school supplies have gone on clearance. When you think back-to-school, think beyond pencils and notebooks. There are a lot of items designed for college students that are also on clearance right now. I got everything I needed to reorganize my closet for 75 percent off! I got shoe racks, hanging storage bins, organization cubes, and a rolling set of clear plastic drawers. It is worth a look to see what kind of back-to-college items you could pick up on the cheap.” — ANDREA T.
These are both great tips! Any time stores mark down seasonal items, I start looking for deals on products that one might not normally think of as “seasonal.” Summer and school items are both great categories to seek out right now. Need a new cooler? Lawn or camp chair? Laundry bag or clothes hamper? All of these items, and more, will soon move out of stores to make way for fall items.
