BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Cedric Carter scored 19 points for LSU Tuesday night as the Tigers beat Robert Morris 63-58.

LSU (5-3) led by as much as 10 points late in the game when they outscored the Colonials 21 to 14. During that run 12 of LSU’s points were made at the free throw line. They made 20 of 35 free throws while Robert Morris made only 5 of 10.

Maurice Carter had 12 points for LSU, Dejuan Collins scored 16 as LSU shot only 40 percent from the field. Robert Morris shot 48 percent, but only 40 percent in the second half.

Robert Morris (3-5) was led by Niall Phelan with 12 points. Keith Jones added 11 and Wesley Fluellen had 10.

LSU led 30-28 at the end of the first half despite shooting only 42 percent from the field. The difference was two 3-point baskets by Collins, the only two made by LSU on nine attempts in the first half. LSU hit only three of 15 3-pointers for the game.

Both teams were sloppy, averaging better than a turnover a minute between them with 21 turnovers in the first 20 minutes _ 12 for Robert Morris and nine for LSU.

Robert Morris outscored LSU 7-2 over the first five minutes of the second half to take a 35-32 lead. LSU’s only points were a pair of free throws by Chris Carter during that stretch.

Robert Morris outrebounded LSU 36 to 32 but could not get open for shots and did not make free throws, allowing the Tigers to come back.
