Man Charged With Murder Enters Innocent Plea
ATLANTA (AP) _ A 31-year-old man pleaded innocent to murdering one of four women slain in less than six weeks, and was transferred from jail to a hospital for psychological evaluation at his attorney’s request.
Richard Hunter pleaded innocent Thursday in Atlanta Municipal Court.
Hunter was charged with murder, rape and burglary in the death of Annie Rochelle Copeland, 85, who was smothered with a pillow in her apartment.
Hunter may have robbed her to support a drug habit, said Maj. B.L. Neikirk, head of a task force investigating the slayings of four elderly women within a two-mile area. All lived alone, were smothered or strangled and sexually assaulted, police said.
Police will seek indictments against Hunter in the other slayings, said Public Safety Commissioner George Napper.
