SANTO DA SERRA, Madeira Islands (AP) _ Jean Van de Velde won the Madeira Island Open by a stroke Sunday by shooting eight birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey in the final round.

Van de Velde, who had not won a title on the European PGA Tour in 13 years, shot a 4-under 68 to finish the tournament at 15-under 273.

Lee Slattery, who also had eight birdies on the final day, finished second by shooting a 6-under 66. The Englishman also had two bogeys in the final round.

Van de Velde's previous tour victory came in Rome in 1993. He also had a chance to win the 1999 British Open, but the Frenchman blew a three-shot lead on the last hole and lost in a playoff.
