Police Fire Additional Child Sex Abuse Charges Against Archbald Man

July 24, 2018

Authorities filed additional charges, including child rape, against an Archbald man already accused of sexually assaulting two children. Mathew Bryant, 27, 1300 W. State St. , is now accused of raping the two children, ages 7 and 9, and also taking nude photographs of one of them. Police noted in new court papers filed Tuesday that Bryan told investigators he raped one of the children three times and the other once within the last two years. The Times-Tribune does not identify victims of sexual assault. Archbald and Dunmore police first filed charges against Bryant on July 12, after an investigation launched on June 28, when police received a report from Moses Taylor Hospital about a 7-year-old sexual assault victim. The girl told police Bryant touched her genitals several times, police said. Police talked to the other victim, who told them Bryant groped her on several occasions while she slept, according to court documents. On another occasion, Bryant made her touch his genitals, police said. Bryant was originally charged with aggravated indecent assault of a child, indecent assault of a child, corruption of minors and related counts. Authorities added charges of child rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child and photographing sex acts involving children. Bryant’s mother, Joan Peterson, 58, 1300 W. State St. , Apt. 4B, faces child endangerment charges related to the sex abuse. Peterson became aware of the abuse but did nothing to protect the victims from Bryant, according to investigators. Bryant waived his preliminary hearing and the charges against Peterson were bound over for trial on Tuesday. Peterson is free on $50,000 unsecured bail. Bryant is held in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail set at the time investigators initially filed charges against him. It’s unclear if a judge set additional bail after the new charges were filed Tuesday. Contact the writer: cover@timesshamrock.com; 570-348-9100 x5363; @ClaytonOver on Twitter
