REDISTRICTING-MIDTERMS

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The task of drawing new boundaries for thousands of federal and state legislative districts is still about three years away, yet the political battle over redistricting already is playing out in this year's midterm elections. Current political boundaries are being legally challenged in about a dozen states, on claims of political or racial gerrymandering. A similar claim remains pending against the Wisconsin state Assembly districts after the nation's highest court in June directed the case back to a lower court for more proceedings. By David A. Lieb. SENT: 1,035 words.

MISS AMERICA

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The second night of preliminary competition in the swimsuit-less Miss America competition will be held Thursday night in Atlantic City. Contestants from Florida and Wisconsin picked up wins Wednesday in the first night of preliminary competition. Miss Wisconsin Tianna Vanderhei won the onstage interview competition for her comments on how higher education should be more affordable and more widely accessible. By Wayne Parry.
