Lady ’Stangs headed for state
NEEDLES — The Lady ’Stangs and Lincoln County Lady Lynx varsity softball teams will represent the NIAA 2A South League when the state championship tournament opens May 16 - 18 at The Meadows School in Las Vegas.
The question remaining is which will enter competition as the No. 1 seed?
The answer will be the conclusion of south league competition today at Mountain View High School, also in Las Vegas. Needles and Lincoln began playing for the top position at 10 a.m. May 11. If Needles wins, they’ll face each other again in the double-elimination tournament.
So far in the south league tournament Needles defeated Laughlin 14-2 in Game 1 on Thursday, May 9; Lincoln defeated The Meadows 10-9 in Game 2, according to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.
On Friday, The Meadows defeated Laughlin 18-2 in Game 3; Lincoln defeated Needles 5-1 in Game 4; and Needles defeated The Meadows 22-17 in Game 5.
Meanwhile, White Pine defeated Yerington 8-5 in Game 1 of the north league; Silver Stage defeated Pershing County 13-0 in Game 2.
Yerington beat Pershing County 6-3 in Game 3; Silver Stage defeated White Pine 14-8 in Game 4.
With two wins Silver Stage, from northeast of Carson City, will be one of the two teams from the north to play for the state championship. The other is to be determined in a White Pine versus Yerington game. The winner faces Silver Stage to determine seeding later today with a Game 7 possible if necessary.
