Police Believe Pain Drove Man to Kill Nurse, Self
LOVELAND, Colo. (AP) _ A man who went berserk with pain when a nurse tried to change the bandages on his backside chased the woman down in his wheelchair, shot her to death and then killed himself.
Felipe Herrera, 53, who was paralyzed years earlier in an auto accident, had been released from a hospital Wednesday after undergoing skin grafts on sores that had developed from frequent sitting in a wheelchair.
Edna Hooks, 60, visited Herrera on Sunday to change his bandages. She called earlier and instructed him to take pain medication before she arrived.
As Hooks began pulling off the bandages, Herrera complained of intense pain and began arguing with the nurse, telling her she wasn’t doing her job right, police Lt. Luke Hecker said.
Hooks fled into the front yard, but Herrera pushed past his sister, beat Hooks with his fists, drew a pistol and shot her twice in the head, Hecker said.
Herrera then shot himself in the head.
