U.S. 4, El Salvador 1
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Brent Goulet scored twice within 16 minutes, lifting the United States to a 4-1 victory over El Salvador Wednesday in an Olympic soccer Group A qualifying match.
The United States, which already had clinched first place in Group A and a berth in the Seoul games, improved its record to 4-0, while El Salvador remained winless in three matches.
Goulet, stationed to the left of the box, scored from 18 yards 7:36 into the contest off a pass by Paul Krumpe, and Peter Vermes hit him in virtually the same spot for a goal at 23:17.
Jorge Abrego scored El Salvador’s lone goal off an assist by Francisco Chachagua at 58:35, but the United States put the match away with two goals in the final 2 1/2 minutes.
Rick Davis hit from 15 yards out and then Vermes was credited with a goal from 18 yards out when his shot deflected into the open net off El Salvador’s Armando Lazo.
U.S. goalie David Vanoli had three saves off five Salvadoran shots, while Bill Santillana recorded five saves off 16 U.S. shots.
