Williamson area schools coach Rod Cline dies at age 70
WILLIAMSON, W.Va. - Former coach Rod Cline, 70, of Lovely, Kentucky, died Saturday, Dec. 22, following a long illness. He was the brother of Marshall University men’s basketball assistant coach Mark Cline.
Cline was born July 28, 1948, in Williamson, a son of the late Herbert B. “Hub” Cline and Golda Coleman Cline.
Cline was active in sports and graduated from Matewan High School in 1967 and went on to earn a bachelor’s in health and physical education from Marshall University and a master’s in health and physical education from East Tennessee State University.
He was a Vietnam War veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.
Cline coached football, baseball and girls basketball at Tug Valley High School. He also coached junior high girls basketball at both Williamson and Lenore and middle school football at both schools. His last coaching job before retirement was with Lady Wolfpack girls basketball at Williamson High School.
