Triangle residents hope to kick off 2019 with $425M Mega Millions win
There’s something about the first day of the year that makes people feel like they can do anything, even become a millionaire.
“It’s a new year. Who knows? Besides, you can’t win unless you play,” Cary resident Tom Imler said.
There’s $425 million on the line in Tuesday night’s Mega Millions drawing. The jackpot is the eighth largest in the game’s history and it is only the fifth time a jackpot drawing has occurred on Jan. 1.
New Year’s Day is a time when people are setting new goals, and some are thinking about what they would do if they became a multi-millionaire.
“I’ve been wanting to do like a children’s hospital or just own one. I work with kids, so I really want to do that. That’s my passion,” Durham resident Crystal Daniels said.
“[I’d] find Gilligan’s Island, just disappear and drop off the map,” Imler said. “Do things for my family, do things for causes I believe in and just fade into the background.”
If there is a winner in Tuesday night’s drawing, that person will need to hold onto their ticket. A pay slip alone will not be enough to redeem the prize.
Luck and details matter for the New Year’s Day wish to come true.
“I would buy a house and then I would probably save the rest for [my daughter’s] college or something like that. And take a trip, several trips,” Daniels said.
