Massachusetts jail getting $4 million in renovations
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — The Hampshire County jail is getting a more than $4 million makeover to update rundown inmate housing.
The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that a modular building at the Northampton jail that opened in 1988 to accommodate an influx of detainees had a five-year lifespan, but is being used to this day.
The building has racked up health and sanitation violations for years as it continued to deteriorate beyond its intended use.
The work includes repairs to the shower and bathroom area, roof and living units, and the installation of new heating and air conditioning units and sprinklers. The updates will bring the building up to code under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Sheriff Patrick Cahillane says the work will help “immensely.” The entire project is expected to take a year.
