Prep football: Down 20, Coal Grove recovers to beat Lucasville Valley

LUCASVILLE, Ohio - Coal Grove spotted Lucasville Valley a 20-point lead in the first half Friday night then roared back to defeat the Indians 21-20.

Coal Grove’s winning drive in the fourth quarter ended with Kyle Sites running for a touchdown with 5:32 left to play.

The Hornets started moving after falling behind 20-0. Nate Harmon tossed a touchdown pass to Aaron Music and Harmon ran for a score to make it 20-14 at halftime.

ROCK HILL 33, NORTHWEST 0: Zak Adkins and Logan Hankins ran for a pair of touchdowns each for the Redmen. T.J. McGinnis rushed 17 times for 119 yards and one touchdown.

Turnovers helped keep Northwest in check. The Mohawks lost three fumbles and threw one interception.

WINFIELD 34, HERBERT HOOVER 27: The Generals (1-1) put up the final 20 points to win on the road.

Herbert Hoover (1-1) had a 27-14 lead late in the third quarter. The Generals converted a fourth down at their own 11-yard line that resulted in a 35-yard touchdown run by Cameron Brooks that cut the deficit to 27-21.

John Covert’s 4-yard scoring run and the extra point put Winfield ahead 28-27 with 5:08 to go. Covert’s 1-yard TD run with 2:09 left made it 34-27.

POINT PLEASANT 58, SOUTH HARRISON 7: Head coach David Darst picked up his 100th career victory Friday in his 11th season with the Big Blacks.

Quarterback Cason Payne had a big game for Point Pleasant (2-0) in Lost Creek, West Virginia, throwing for 160 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 59 yards on five carries. Brady Adkins picked up 100 yards on eight rushes.

The Hawks (0-2) avoided a shutout with 7:39 remaining.

GREEN 86, HANNAN 14: The Bobcats (2-0) lead 40-0 after one quarter and 62-0 before Hannan (0-2) got on the scoreboard. Hannan finished its home game with just 12 players available because of injuries.

CHESAPEAKE 21, ALEXANDER 13: Brady Wilson’s 27-yard field goal with about five minutes remaining provided Chesapeake (1-1) with an eight-point cushion and the Panthers made a defensive stand to preserve the win in Albany, Ohio. After the field goal, Alexander (1-1) drove to the Chesapeake 30-yard line and turned the ball over on downs.

Wilson also booted a 20-yard field goal. Tylan Hutchison caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from Austin Browning and Logan Walsh broke off an 87-yard scoring run.

WATERFORD 41, SOUTH GALLIA 6: The Wildcats (2-0) scored 28 points off six Rebel turnovers in winning a Tri-Valley Conference opener in Mercerville, Ohio. Kyle Northup led South Gallia (0-2) with 102 yards rushing on 17 carries.

PORTSMOUTH WEST 13, PORTSMOUTH 0: Garrett Hurd and Josh Berry ran for second-half touchdowns as the Senators (2-0) defeated the Trojans (1-1). Portsmouth West held Portsmouth to 57 total yards.

COLUMBUS HARTLEY 51, WHEELERSBURG 20: The Division III Hawks built a 31-6 halftime lead and rolled to victory over the defending Division V state champion Pirates in Columbus, Ohio, to snap Wheelersburg’s 16-game winning streak and run of 36 consecutive regular-season triumphs.

GREENUP COUNTY 60, FLEMING COUNTY 13: Dalton Halstead rushed for 140 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries as the Musketeers (3-0) pummeled the Panthers (1-2) in Lloyd, Kentucky. Eli Sammons passed for 245 yards and three touchdowns.

NICHOLAS COUNTY 43, FAIRVIEW 0: Quarterback Isaac Fryman ran for 162 yards on 10 carries and the Bluejackets rushed for 358 yards in a shutout of the Eagles in Westwood, Kentucky. Fairview gained just 35 yards.
