Coquille knocks Oakland from ranks of the unbeaten
COQUILLE — It was an OSAA Class 2A power poll top-10 matchup when Oakland visited Coquille High Wednesday night and the Oakers came out on the short end as the host Red Devils picked up a 50-36 girls basketball victory in the nonleague game.
Oakland (7-1) lost for the first time this season and slipped to fifth in the rankings. Coquille (8-0), which moved down to 2A from 3A this year, moved up to No. 2 in the state.
“They were tough,” OHS coach Don Witten said. “We got down early, about 10-2, and then made a good run back and we caught them midway through the second (quarter). We had a couple of leads, but we got in a little foul trouble and we got behind by 5-6 and could never get over the hump.”
Oakland trailed 26-23 at the half, but had a hard time scoring in the second half on the Red Devils’ long court.
“Playing at their place was tough,” Witten said. “I think we were feeling that there down the stretch, especially with playin gon back-to-back nights. We looked a little gassed in the second half and couldn’t get our shots to fall as well.”
Morgan Baird scored 22 points to lead the Red Devils, who finished fourth at the Class 3A tournament last season. Drew Wilson and Abbey Dieu both added eight points.
Oakland was led by senior Hadley Brooksby with 18 points, while Grace Witten added 10. Cassidy Jones had 16 rebounds for OHS.
The Oakers face another top-five game on Friday when they host No. 1 Kennedy, which won the state title for the second time in three years last March in Pendleton. The Trojans are 10-0 after defeating Gervais 62-35 on Wednesday.
“They’re rightfully sitting up there in the No. 1 spot,” Don Witten said of Kennedy. “They are just really balanced, very solid and don’t have a lot of, or many, weaknesses. They’re big and they have experience.
“We’re looking at it as an opportunity to learn something.”
