Education notebook: Mt. Spokane teacher to receive Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching History

Luke Thomas, a social studies teacher at Mt. Spokane High School, was recently awarded the Washington State Historical Society’s Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching History. The award will be presented Sept. 22 at the society’s annual meeting in Tacoma.

The award was first given in 1998. It commends those who demonstrate excellency in teaching history by such accomplishments as the development of innovative curriculum, the utilization and advancement of knowledge of Pacific Northwest history and its themes, and creating a lasting impact on students. The award includes $750 and a Gold Star of recognition.

Event to aid WVSD running program

West Valley School District’s Active4Youth will host a fundraising dinner auction 5 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Spokane Convention Center, 334 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. The event proceeds help support the district’s elementary school cross-country program.

Free vaccination clinic at Lidgerwood

Spokane Public Schools will provide a free vaccination clinic 3:30-6:30 p.m. Monday at Lidgerwood Elementary School, 5510 N. Lidgerwood St.

Washington state law requires each child attending school to be immunized according to a schedule determined by the Washington State Board of Health. Parents and guardians of students will be required to complete a certificate of immunization during school registration.

Open house to unveil Mead schools projects

The Mead School District will host an open house and viewing of the preliminary designs of the Market Street Campus Projects 5-7 p.m. today at Northwood Middle School, 12908 N. Pittsburg St. A traffic meeting will be 6:30 p.m. in the library.

The projects include a new sports and performing arts complex, transportation facility, maintenance facility and elementary school. All of the projects were approved by voters in February and are being fast-tracked in anticipation of escalating construction costs. Their estimated completion date is 2020.
