Boys basketball: Lake City, Austin receive seeds for state tournament
Section One champs Lake City and Austin earned seeds in this week’s boys basketball state tournaments, while Section 1A champion Spring Grove is unseeded and has a tough first-round draw.
The top five teams in each of the four classes are seeded and the bottom three teams are unseeded. The fourth and fifth seeds meet in the quarterfinals while a random draw is used to determine which unseeded teams face one of the top three seeds.
Lake City, the Section 1AA champion, is seeded No. 5 in the Class AA tournament. The Tigers (26-2) will open with No. 4 Melrose (26-4) in the state quarterfinals at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Target Center.
“I thought there was a chance we could get the three or maybe four (seed),” Lake City coach Greg Berge said. But the coaches votes mirrored the QRF ratings in Class AA as Lake City was No. 5 and Melrose was fourth.
Minnehaha Academy (26-2) is the top seed in Class AA and, if it wins in the quarterfinals, looms in the semifinals for the Lake City/Melorse winner.
Section 1AAA champ Austin is the No. 3 seed in Class AAA. The Packers (23-5) will face Monticello (14-15) in the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Williams Arena. DeLaSalle (24-5) is the top seed in AAA.
“We’re really happy to be the No. 3 seed,” Austin coach Kris Fadness said.
Spring Grove, the Section 1A champ, was unseeded despite having a 23-4 record. The Lions will face No. 1 Springfield (27-2) in the state quarterfinals at 11 a.m. Thursday at Williams Arena.
Lakeville North (25-4) is the No. 5 seed in Class AAAA and opens with No. 4 Eden Prairie (20-9) at noon Wednesday at Target Center. Park Center (28-1) is the top seed in the class.
The tournament runs Wednesday-Saturday. The winner-bracket games are being held at Williams Arena and Target Center. The four championship games are Saturday at Target Center.
