TOKYO (AP) _ Mike Marshall hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning, giving the Nippon Ham fighters a 4-3 victory over the Orix Bluewave in the Pacific League on Friday night.
Marshall, a former major leaguer, has five home runs in his first year in Japan.
Ralph Bryant boosted his league-leading home run total to seven with a two- run homer as the Kintetsu Buffaloes beat the Chiba Lotte Marines 10-3. Jessie Reid, another former major leaguer, hit his fourth homer for Kintetsu.
Jack Howell hit his fifth homer as the Yakult Swallows edged the Yomiuri Giants 7-6.
MIYOSHI, Japan (AP) - Huang Bie-shyun of Taiwan shot a 4-under-par 68 Friday and took a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Hiroshima Women's Open.
Tied for second were Australian Jennifer Seviln and Japanese Suzue Maeda, Kikuko Shibata and Yukie Ueki.
American Patti Rizzo, winner of last week's Nasu Ogawa, shot a 73.
MILAN, Italy (AP) - Benetton Treviso and Scavolini Pesaro open a best-of-5 series for the Italian major league basketball title on Saturday.
Both won semifinal playoffs Thursday night.
Vinny Del Negro scored 29 points and Toni Kukoc added 19 as Treviso defeated Messaggero Roma 90-82. Rick Mahorn scored 15 for the losers.
Darren Daye scored 29 points as Pesaro beat Knorr Bologna 97-83.
GANDIA, Spain (AP) - Jean Paul Van Poppel of the Netherlands won Friday's fifth stage of the Tour of Spain, his second victory in the 21-day event.
Van Poppel covered the 116 miles in 5 hours, 22 minutes, 38 seconds.
Pello Ruiz Cabestany of Spain remained the overall leader for the fourth consecutive day. Defending champion Melchor Mauri of Spain remained in second place, 25 seconds back.
