RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ Charles Shackleford scored 12 of his 16 points in the final 10 minutes to spark No. 16 North Carolina State to an 86-82 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Wake Forest Sunday.

Shackleford’s run started in the midst of a six-point burst which led the Wolfpack from a 67-66 deficit to a 72-67 lead with 6:55 remaining. Until that point, the two teams had engaged in a see-saw battle in which the lead changed hands 16 times through the first 32 minutes.

The Demon Deacons missed easy inside shots down the stretch and Shackleford continued his run, hitting two free throws with 27 seconds left to extend the N.C. State lead to 86-79.

Wake Forest ran past the Wolfpack defense in the first half on the strength of shooting by Ralph Kitley and Sam Ivy. The pair shared the team’s first 17 points with Ivy scoring nine. A Cal Boyd 3-point basket gave Wake Forest a 47-40 edge with 1:22 left, but the Wolfpack got seven straight points and tied the score 47-all at halftime on Rodney Monroe’s jumper from the right baseline.

Vinny Del Negro led N.C. State with 24 points. Chucky Brown had 18 and Monroe 17 for the Wolfpack, 23-6 and 10-4 in the ACC.

Kitley scored a season-high 22 points for Wake Forest. Boyd and Ivy scored 19 each and David Carlyle had 17 as the Demon Deacons dropped to 10-17 and 3-11.
