NEW YORK (AP) _ It was with mixed feelings that she accepted a ride aboard Forty Niner in next week’s Breeders Cup, jockey Julie Krone said Tuesday.

Krone was named a day earlier to ride the 3-year-old in place of Laffit Pincay at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5.

Seth Hancock, Forty Niner’s owner, passed up Pincay for the $3 million Classic on the Breeders’ Cup card because the jockey refused to ride the colt at Aqueduct last Saturday. He would not across the picket line of striking riders at the track.

″I feely badly that Laffit will not be riding, and I fully support the strike,″ Krone said. ″But it was an opportunity I could not pass up.″

Krone will be the first woman to ride in the Breeders Cup.

Forty Niner was the champion 2-year old last year.
