MONTPELLIER, France (AP) — Second-seeded Gilles Simon advanced to the quarterfinals of the Open Sud de France by defeating fellow Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday.

Simon broke his opponent five times and will next face big-serving Jerzy Janowicz of Poland.

“I’m happy with the way I played and to have won in straight sets,” Simon said. “I feel good this week. I hope it will continue and that I can go on and play without being injured as long as possible, which was not the case at the beginning of last year.”

Fourth-seeded Richard Gasquet then defeated Lucas Pouille 6-3, 7-6 (6) in another all-French second-round match. Gasquet, runner-up last year in Montpellier, came back from 3-6 down in the tiebreak to close out the match.

“Lucas is very talented player, and I was ready to play a tight match, which it was,” said Gasquet. “He had nothing to lose. The second set was very close, and he had three set points. It’s never easy to play such young French players.”

Seventh-seeded Joao Sousa also progressed after rallying to beat Tobias Kamke of Germany 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In first round action, Malek Jaziri of Tunisia quit after winning the first set 6-3 against sixth-seeded Denis Istomin, citing an elbow injury.
