Longmont Closes Sunset Swimming Pool

October 8, 2018

Amelia Tropman, 11, wears her mermaid tail at Sunset Pool May 25, 2018, the first day of the pool's season. The pool closed Monday because of weather conditions.

Longmont, citing forecasts that overnight temperatures are expected to fall below freezing, has closed Sunset Swimming Pool, 1900 Longs Peak Ave.

The city has kept Sunset open beyond its normal Sept. 3 closing date after a faulty sump pump flooded and severely damaged the electrical system at its indoor Centennial Swimming Pool, 1201 Alpine St., in August.

As recently as last Wednesday, city officials said Sunset would remain open until Oct. 14, “weather permitting.”

However, Longmont posted a notice on its Sunset Pool website — tinyurl.com/y8gkvowo — that Sunset, a heated outdoor pool, is now closed for the season, effective Monday.

“The bath house at Sunset Pool was built as a summer only facility, and with the overnight temperatures dropping below freezing, we are concerned about freezing pipes. So, sad as we are, we have decided to turn in the towel, and finally say good-bye to summer,” city officials said in that notice.
