SHOREVIEW, Minn. (AP) _ Deluxe Corp. plans to cut about 1,000 additional jobs from its core check-printing business to pare its overhead.

The cuts announced Monday are in addition to previously-disclosed plans to trim 2,500 jobs from its 19,000 total worldwide.

The total cut of 3,500 jobs, or 18.4 percent of the work force, will occur over the next 18 months. Deluxe is trying to reduce as much as $100 million from its selling, general and administrative costs.

Deluxe spokesman Stuart Alexander said the goal is to bring its expenses in line with rivals' costs.

He said he didn't know how many of the latest cuts will be through layoffs. ``It will depend on how many jobs can be eliminated through attrition,'' Alexander said Monday.
