Junior hockey: Grizzlies top Bulls, Bruins win in OT
MASON CITY, Iowa — Nick Bucklin made 27 saves and 10 players recorded at least one point as the Rochester Grizzlies beat perennial North American 3 Hockey League power North Iowa in a West Division battle, 6-3 on Friday.
The Grizzlies never trailed, building leads of 3-2 after one period and 4-2 after two.
The victory leaves Rochester (15-5-0 overall) tied with North Iowa for second place in the West, just two points back of division-leading Granite City.
Rochester Lourdes graduate Lucas Newman had a big night for the Grizzlies on Friday, recording a goal and three assists. He scored 3:53 into the game for a 1-0 lead. Nic Leisen and Vlad Sorokin also scored in the first for the Grizzlies, and Seth Bacon notched a second-period goal on a power play to make it 4-2.
Defenseman Brock Hildenbrand then scored twice in the third — his third and fourth goals of the season — to seal the victory.
Sorokin had two assists, while Bacon, Leisen, Kory Potach, Porter Haney, Joey Fodstad, Richard Szabo and Peyton Hart had one each.
The teams play again tonight at Mason City.
BRUINS WIN IN OT
AUSTIN — The Austin Bruins couldn’t quite seal their victory in regulation, but they took care of business in overtime.
Dante Sheriff scored 3:34 into the extra period to lift Austin to a 2-1 North American Hockey League victory against Minot on Friday at Riverside Arena.
Sheriff opened the scoring with 13 seconds to go in the first period, with assists from Garrett Dahm and Terry Ryder. That’s how the score remained until Minot’s Matthew Gellerman notched his team’s lone goal with 5:16 left in regulation.
That set up Sheriff’s second of the night, assisted by Dahm and Jed Pietila, to win the game.
Kyle McClellan made 27 saves in the victory for Austin (14-6-3 overall), which is just two points behind Minot for first place in the NAHL Central Division.
The teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. tonight in Austin.
