Former Husker AJ Bush will begin the season as Illinois’ starting quarterback. Coach Lovie Smith announced the decision Monday.
Bush emerged as the favorite despite not arriving on campus until Aug. 3.
“We’re excited about what AJ has done,” Smith said. “He moved into a leadership role right away.”
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Georgia native begin his career at Nebraska in 2014 where he was among the quarterbacks behind Tommy Armstrong on the depth chart. Bush transferred to Iowa Western in 2016 and played at Virginia Tech last year. He joined Illinois as a graduate transfer, making him immediately eligible to play.
″(Bush) made plays through camp,” offensive coordinator Rod Smith said. “He was probably the most consistent in camp, made the most big plays, the least amount of mistakes. All the things we ask our quarterback to do, he did.”
Illinois hosts Kent State at 11 a.m. Saturday.
