Kankakee police probe apparent hit-and-run accident that claimed life of man

KANKAKEE — Anthony Stewart II died as a result of injuries he sustained in an apparent hit-and-run accident early Tuesday morning in Kankakee.

The 40-year-old Stewart was found laying in the road in the 200 block of North Chicago Avenue near East Oak Street at approximately 1:38 a.m., according to Kankakee Police.

Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene. The results of an autopsy performed Tuesday remain under investigation pending toxicology reports, according to police.

The vehicle that hit Stewart has not been located.

Nearby the hit-and-run scene, officers found another man injured on the sidewalk. He suffered non-life threatening injuries from a battery and was taken to Presence St. Mary’s Hospital.

Investigators are still working to determine if the two incidents are related, police said.
