Armored Car Robbed in San Francisco

July 4, 1998

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ In a daring daylight robbery, at least five armed men robbed an armored car outside a crowded discount store and shot a store guard in the leg.

The suspects were still at large early today after getting away with an undetermined amount of money. The store guard was hospitalized and listed in good condition.

The suspects wore ski masks and ambushed guards carrying money to the armored car parked in front of the Costco Wholesale store about 1:30 p.m. Friday, witnesses said.

``I saw gunmen in masks come up and knock down these guards. They were really small guards,″ said Barbara Ice, a shopper. ``I saw one guy hold a gun right to a guard’s head. I heard gun shots ... Then I just ran and lied down on the ground and tried to be out of the way.″

The suspects fled in a nearby minivan, later changing cars in an alley, police Lt. Larry Minasian said.
