Liberty Defeats Rockers 73-52

NEW YORK (AP) _ Tari Phillips scored 15 points, 10 in the first half, as the New York Liberty won their fourth straight game with a 73-52 victory Monday night over the Cleveland Rockers.

Vickie Johnson followed with 14 points, one more than Tamika Whitmore, the WNBA player of the week. Teresa Weatherspoon added a season-high 10 points for New York (14-9), which has won six of eight.

It was the Liberty’s first win over Cleveland this season in three tries.

Merlakia Jones scored 11 points for the Rockers (8-14), who have lost eight of nine. Chasity Melvin added 10 points.

Robinson made a basket to start a 7-2 run that gave the Liberty a 14-9 lead at 12:06.

Penny Taylor made two foul shots to cut it to 14-11, but Robinson made a jumper and two free throws, and Becky Hammon hit a 3-pointer during a 15-0 run that gave the Liberty a 26-11 lead at 4:34.

Phillips made a layup, and Johnson hit a jumper in the last 12 seconds of the first half to give New York a 37-18 lead.

Whitmore opened the second half with a jumper to make it 39-18, but Cleveland went on a 9-3 run to close within 42-27 at 16:12.

New York answered with an 11-4 spurt, behind Robinson’s 3-pointer, to make it 53-31 at 12:05.
