Man Struck, Killed By Amtrak Passenger Train

November 25, 1996

ATTLEBORO, Mass. _ A 25-year-old man was struck and killed Sunday afternoon by an Amtrak train with about 300 passengers aboard, authorities said. No one on the train was hurt.

David Hill Jr. was hit by the train, bound from Boston to Washington, D.C., near the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority station in downtown Attleboro, police officer Robert Hale said.

Hale said the train was going about 100 mph _ the legal speed limit _ when the accident happened at 2:45 p.m.

``It appears he was just crossing the tracks and didn’t see it coming,″ Hale said.

Hale said Hill was killed within a fenced area that includes rails for MBTA commuter trains and the high-speed Amtrak trains. Although it is not a crosswalk, Hale said people occasionally cross the tracks there.

Passengers waited aboard the train for about 2 1/2 hours while police and investigators from the MBTA and Amtrak examined the scene. Hale said an autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
