Komets bolster blue line with trade
The Komets have bolstered the offensive capabilities of their blue-line corps and trimmed their roster : both necessary moves : in one swift move today.
They acquired defenseman Trey Phillips from the Jacksonville Icemen for forward Garrett Ladd and defenseman Chris Rygus.
Phillips, 25, had four assists in 20 games with the Icemen. He is coming off a four-season career at the University of Vermont : he was a teammate of Antony Petruzzelli : before which he was a prolific scoring defenseman in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, totaling 25 goals and 65 points in 58 games in 2013-14 for the Canmore Eagles. That season, Phillips was the AJHL’s MVP and Most Outstanding Defensemen.
Ladd had three goals and six points in 15 games for the Komets. Rygus had one goal and two points in eight games.
The Komets, who are expected to get Mason Baptista back in the lineup, play host to the Wichita Thunder at 8 p.m. today.
