January 26, 2000

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) _ Santa Clara athletic director Carroll Williams said Tuesday he will retire after eight years, assuming a part-time job in athletic fundraising and alumni relations for the school.

Williams, 66, a former basketball player at San Jose State, is the winningest coach in Santa Clara basketball history. In 22 years, Williams was 344-274 and led the Broncos to five postseason appearances.

School president Paul Locatelli said he will appoint a committee to search for Williams’ successor. Williams will remain until July 1 or until a successor is hired.
