Rain fell this morning in New York and parts of the Southeast, while the Midwest was hazy and humid and the West fair and cool.

Temperature extremes before dawn ranged from a high of 85 degrees at Del Rio, Texas, and a low of 42 degrees at Houlton, Maine.

Thunderstorms and locally heavy rainfall could drench the Rockies of New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming today, with lingering showers in the rest of the Pacific Northwest. Parts of Montana are expected to be very windy.

A scattering of strong to severe thunderstorms will also be possible from Florida to eastern New Mexico, Oklahoma and most of the Plains to the northwest Great Lakes region.

Those storms could produce a few isolated tornadoes, some hail, local rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches and wind gusts up to 65 mph.

Windy conditions and a chance of rain was forecast in the Northeast, while humid weather and scattered showers were possible in the Southeast.

Warm, humid weather was expected in the Midwest, while scattered rain and some clouds were possible in the Southwest.

The nation's hot spot Thursday was 101 degrees at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, while the coolest spot was 33 at Ely, Nev.
