Kournikova Advances in Mexico

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) _ Anna Kournikova advanced to the semifinals of the Abierto Mexicano Pegaso tournament Thursday, beating Slovakia’s Janette Husarova 6-3, 6-4.
Kournikova, the popular Russian seeking her first WTA Tour title, will face Slovakia’s Katarina Srebotnik, a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 winner over fourth-seeded Cristina Torrens Valero of Spain.
Top-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia will face seventh-seeded Paola Suarez of Argentina in the other semifinal.
Dementieva led Emilie Loit of France 6-4 when Loit withdrew because of an injury. Suarez beat third-seeded Amanda Coetzer of South Africa 6-3, 6-4.
In the second round of the men’s competition, Spain’s Albert Montanes beat sixth-seeded countryman Felix Mantilla 6-4, 6-4; Argentina’s Mariano Zabaleta edged Sweden’s Magnus Norman 7-5, 6-4; Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela beat Chile’s Nicolas Massu 2-6, 7-6 (10), 6-4; and Spain’s Francisco Clavet led compatriot Jacobo Diaz 4-0 when Diaz retired because of an injury.
