Small fire cancels church service
A small electrical fire at The Chapel canceled Sunday morning services. No injuries were reported.
A faulty electrical cord apparently set straw in a Nativity scene on fire at the church, 2505 W. Hamilton Road, leading to an evacuation of the well-attended morning service.
The Aboite Fire Department responded to a 911 call about 8:45 a.m. By the time firefighters arrived, church staff had extinguished most of the fire with fire extinguishers, an Aboite Fire Department spokesman said.
Ventilator fans were used to remove smoke from the main area, the spokesman added.
No one injured in Pelham house fire
No one was injured in a house fire that badly damaged the kitchen area.
Firefighters were called just after 1 p.m. Sunday to a house in the 1200 block of Pelham Drive on reports of smoke and fire visible from the outside. When firefighters arrived within a minute, flames were extending through the roof, according to a news release.
Firefighters got the fire under control in 17 minutes, and the house received heavy fire damage to the roof and kitchen area in the rear of the house, as well as moderate smoke and water damage. No people or pets were inside at the time of the fire.
The fire remains under investigation.
