Judge Grants Fujimori Divorce But Case Still Unresolved

November 17, 1995

LIMA, Peru (AP) _ A civil court judge has granted a divorce to President Albert Fujimori, but the marriage hasn’t been terminated because his wife is contesting the grounds for the breakup.

Judge German Aguirre informed lawyers for former first lady Susan Higuchi on Thursday that he had granted Fujimori’s request to dissolve the marriage on the ground his wife caused serious injury to the marriage.

Higuchi, who publicly accused Fujimori of corruption, then tried to run against him for president, wants out of the marriage, too. But she doesn’t want to be blamed for the breakup. So she’s asked a family court in Lima to dissolve the marriage by mutual consent, a category that would not confer any blame.

If the court upholds Higuchi’s request, another judge would have to consider the case because the two rulings would be incompatible.

Fujimori, 57, filed for divorce in May after almost a year of public feuding with his 45-year-old wife, who no longer lives in the presidential palace.
