Hayride Accident Kills Two, Injures 14
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) _ Four children remained hospitalized Sunday from injuries sustained when a car struck a wagon carrying a church group on a hayride, killing two children and injuring 14, authorities said.
″We were ... waving to all these people driving by in cars,″ said Karen Habra, 14, who was riding in the tractor-pulled wagon during the Friday accident. ″We saw this car come up and we were going to wave, and the next thing I knew, he crashed into us.″
A car driven by Bruce Webster, 38, of Scotts crashed into the rear of the wagon, said Kalamozoo County sheriff’s Sgt. Dominic Caro. Webster was treated for minor injuries.
The sheriff’s Department was continuing its investigation.
State police dispatcher Sue Latios identified those killed as Amy Ann Coleman, 11, of Kalamazoo, and Sara Rutten, 13, of Scotts.
Sara Rutten’s 11-year-old sister, Stephanie, was in critical condition Sunday at Bronson Methodist Hospital with head injuries, said a nursing supervisor who declined identification.
Three other children were hospitalized in fair or good condition with head injuries.
Eleven others were treated at the hospitals and released, authorities said.
