Boys hockey | Lourdes’ win worth the wait
NEW ULM – Dustin Sorensen has scored some big goals for Rochester Lourdes this season. Few, if any, have been bigger than his second goal on Saturday.
Sorensen, a senior forward, scored with 3 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Eagles a 3-2 boys hockey victory against New Ulm. The unassisted, even-strength goal sent the Eagles into the holiday break on a high note, improving to 6-4-0.
“Dustin played arguably his best game of the season and it was nice to see him get rewarded with the OT winner,” Lourdes coach Joe Knoepke said.
Sam Decker made 23 saves to get the win.
Jared Anderson also scored for Lourdes, his goal coming 3:49 into the third period. It gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead and looked like it was going to be the game winner until New Ulm’s Glavine Schugel scored with 45 seconds left in regulation to force OT.
“Jared is always so strong on the puck and he won some crucial battles for us in all three zones,” Knoepke said. “The team as a whole played our most complete game of the year. We still haven’t played to our potential for three full periods yet, but this was as close as we’ve come.
“It’s a big win before a much-needed break to get ready for the Kiwanis (tournament).”
Lourdes opens play in the annual Kiwanis Festival at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against Fargo (N.D.) South/Shanley.
